Want to Go Remote? We can identify remote locations near you upon request. Tell us your area of interest in a comment below (from a county park to your own personal property to a national forest), and we’ll tell you where the most remote location is within that property. It is our pleasure to help you get out and experience the profound feeling of remoteness.
This service is free, but if you like what Remote Footprints is doing, we greatly appreciate any tax-deductible donation that you may wish to give. We cannot accomplish our mission without the support of people like you.
Two caveats:
- The accuracy of our calculations is based on the integrity of the most detailed and current road data available. We have learned from experience that the data are not always that accurate and often leave out many roads. We will do our best to compensate for this discrepancy. We think it says a lot about the speed and nature of road building in this country that we cannot obtain super accurate data in this technologically advanced day and age, don’t you?
- This service is designed for private individuals only. If you are a for-profit business and are interested in discussing a partnership, please email us at admin@remotefootprints.org.

This is a great program. I am particularly interested in the big bend area of Florida, SW Georgia and SE Alabama
Jean, we have actually calculated the remotest location of the Big Bend – between the Suwanee and Apalachicola Rivers. We are leading a trip to it next Saturday (the 17th). Here is more info: http://remotefootprints.org/go-remote/florida-big-bend-remote-spot-guided-trip
As for your other locations, if you can give us specific areas (counties, national forests, etc) we would be glad to calculate the remotest location within that specific area.
Hi Guys,
Great website! Timely too. We are volunteers in a non-profit group called Wild Virginia. http://www.wildvirginia.org
Our mission is to protect the George Washington National Forest (GWNF) in the state of Virginia. Can you help us find the most remote spot in the GWNF? If so, what is the suggested donation from a non-profit group like ours?
We can certainly link to your website!
Thanks,
Eric 434-882-3179
Hi Eric, our first run at the calculation puts the George Washington National Forest Remote Spot at 2.88 miles from the nearest road. We have emailed you a .kmz file so that you can view it in Google Earth. As happens frequently, the state road data available did not include all the roads in the Forest Service system so we had to digitize a few in and run the calculation a few times. Because you know the area better than us, let us know if you see something that looks like a road that is closer than 2.88 miles from a road and we will readdress.
If you lead a trip to this spot, which would be an awesome experience for your organization, we just ask that you mention Remote Footprints and Project Remote. We believe bringing Project Remote to a local level is an essential way to help people understand the importance of the nationwide project and the value of protecting remote, roadless areas.
It was great working and connecting with your organization!
On Cheat Mountain, WV, can you identify the most remote area I can reach hiking in from forest service roads off US 250?
John
This is such a cool project. Thank you!
Anne
Hi John and Anne. I (Rebecca) remember Cheat Mnt well — I worked on Westvaco property on a salamander study in the 90s and we explored Cheat looking for the Cheat Mnt salamander. I will need to play around with creating Cheat Mountain polygons and see what I can find off US 250. It may take a few days but try checking back at the end of the week.
I’d guess somewhere upstream (south) of Beaver Creek (end of open FS road south of 250), or north of FS92 along Shavers Fork. old rail line, but no road access between McGee Run and Bemis to my knowledge. long, remote whitewater run. wonderful area that feels very northern and far removed from civilization. thanks. John
We used road data obtained from the USFS for the Monogahela NF and our calculations led to a Spot 1.2 miles from a road southwest of Rocky Run but north of the Randolph/Pocahontas county line. It looks, however, like there are roads that are not accounted for in the road data just to the west of the the Spot. I will email you the .kmz file so you can pull it up on Google Earth and we can go from there via email.
